All was quiet in the Jackson household. Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. Mind you, no mouse would dare set foot in Kirsten Jackson's house, well not if they wanted to live. All four of Kirsten's children were asleep in their beds, and Kirsten was just heading up to bed herself. It was after midnight, and Brae hadn't been home all evening. Not that Kirsten was worried. She'd known him long enough to know he could handle himself, and she trusted him, so what was their really to worry about? Nothing.
Slowly making her way up the stairs, Kirsten flicked off the few remaining lights that she had left on from when she had finally put the kids to bed. Kirsten sighed slightly. She wasn't able to get little Paisley off to bed before 9:30 - two hours after she was supposed to go to bed, and Brett and Jordan hadn't gone to bed until an hour after that. As to Ryder. Well, Kirsten wasn't sure when he went to bed. She'd given up trying to get that boy to do anything after Paisley went to bed. It was no longer worth her effort after that point, because it was evident that he wasn't going to listen to her.
Kirsten knew she had to do something about Ryder. She loved him with all of her heart, but she just couldn't get him to listen to her. Maybe it was the fact that he was a teenage boy, and she was shorter than him now. Mind you, she had been shorter than him since he turned twelve. But it hadn't been until recently that he had started ignoring her and what she asked him to do. With a small sigh, Kirsten decided she would have Brae talk to him when he got home. After all, that was probably the only way Kirsten could get his attention. If not, she would have to resort to her own methods of getting him to listen, and he probably wouldn't like those.
Kirsten had locked all the doors and shut all the windows on the ground floor. And, all the lights were off in the house as Kirsten flipped the lights on into her bedroom and then the one in her bathroom. Quickly, the small blond brushed her teeth, washed her face and, changed into her pj's. Kirsten Pj's consisted of a pair of flannel plaid white grey and black boxer shorts and a white tank top. Quickly running a comb through her hair, Kirsten pulled it up into an elastic so it wouldn't get to knotted in her sleep.
Turning the light off in the bathroom, Kirsten walked out of her room one last time going to check on the kids for a final time that night. Kirsten figured that Brae would check them again when he came home. Opening the door to each of their bedrooms, Kirsten checked inside to make sure they were still there and that they were all right. As she came to Ryder's bedroom, Kirsten gave a small sigh. It looked like a bomb had gone off.. again. Rolling her eyes, Kirsten took a big black permanent marker from Ryder's desk and wrote on the back of his door. CLEAN YOUR ROOM! She would use magic to take it off later... When he actually did it.
Putting the marker back on her desk, Kirsten Headed back into her room. Brae still had not come home, and Kirsten was starting to wonder where he was. It was getting close to one in the morning now, and it was odd that he wasn't home. Shrugging her thin shoulders, Kirsten pulled back the covers of her over sized king bed and climbed in. Flipping the lights off, Kirsten laid down and pulled the covers up around her shoulders. She had left the door open so she could hear when Brae came home or if one of the kids needed her. It wasn't long after Kirsten fell asleep that she heard the soft sound of little feet coming across her bed room floor.
Glancing at her bedside clock, Kirsten gave a small sigh. It was only just after two. She'd only been sleeping for just over an hour. As her senses returned to her, Kristen noticed that Brae had still not come home and that the person who was in her room was much to small to be on of the boys. "What's wrong baby?" Kirsten asked the small four year old.
Paisley had had another bad dream it was the third one this week. Paisley's eyes were red and sore from crying. Using one of her small hands, Paisley used her knuckles to wipe the tears away from her blue eyes. She was holding Mr Bear tightly and small sobbing hiccups passed through her small mouth. "Mommy," Paisley said her small voice sounding chocked by tears. "I had a bad dream... Daddy died.." Paisley voice game soft her tears evident in her voice.
"Shhh," Kirsten said soothingly. "It'll be ok. why don't you come up here and sleep with me for a bit?" Kirsten said turning on the light. Pulling the blankets down on the other side of her Kirsten got the pillows ready for the small girl. Helping Paisley up onto the big bed, Kristen let her get comfy before she herself sunk back down into the soft pillows and mattress. Pulling the blankets up around herself a Paisley, Kristen flipped off the lights. Wrapping her arms around the small girl Kirsten smoothed Paisley's hair out of her eyes and gently rubbed her back to calm her.
"It's ok," Kirsten said in a sing song voice to calm Paisley further. "It's ok Daddy will be home soon." Kirsten said to the small girl who was still crying softly into the pillow. "Shhh.. It's ok I'm here, and I won't let anything happen to you," Kirsten's voice was soft and reassuring as she gentled Paisley into sleep.
Laying awake after Paisley's sobs had at long last subsided and she had finally fallen back into sleep. Kirsten couldn't help but think about Paisley's dream. Brae had died and that had put her in a state.. Paisley had been having the same nightmare for the last couple of nights, and that worried Kirsten. As a child, Kristen herself had suffered terrible nightmares, but the nightmares she always had always came true. And now the way Paisley was having nightmares so often it worried Kirsten. Could she be predicting the future like Kirsten? Kirsten didn't know what she would do with out Brae. He was her life. She didn't think she could go on without him.
Kirsten remained awake lost in her thoughts and fears for over an hour. Brae had yet to return, and that was really starting to worry Kirsten. She wanted him home, and she wanted him home NOW! It wasn't before about quarter to four that Kirsten finally fell asleep. Kirsten slept lightly, emotionally exhausted and to tired to stay awake, but her mind wouldn't stop. She couldn't get the thought of Brae dieing out of her mind, and with him not home yet? What was she to think.
Kirsten figures she went on like that four about another 45 minutes before something distant woke her up. opening her blue eyes, it took Kirsten a few moments before she figured out what it was. it was a light burning from somewhere down the hall. Paisley was still asleep next to Kirsten, but someone was walking around the house. Kirsten wondered who it was. It could have been one of the boys who'd needed a drink in the middle of the night. It could have been Brae who had finally returned home to her. or it could be someone else. Lying quietly, Kirsten waited for whoever it was to show themselves.
